Melanie Shortell

Melanie is a Brazilian / American designer with a BA in History and an MA in User Experience Design. After learning about the global impact of social and political systems throughout history, she felt inspired to learn how we can create and influence new ones through studying Experience Design. Mel is interested in the social and political effects of the digital world, and more specifically, the ethical debate around issues such as AI machine learning. She is also passionate about sustainable design and will work towards a greener future no matter which route she takes.

(dis)obey

This project explores the varied responses of Londoners to the guidelines and restrictions imposed by the UK Government during the pandemic. Through the distortion of artefacts, (dis)obey functions as a dual representation of both fearful and skeptical sentiments towards the virus. On the one hand, the artefacts serve as an extreme form of protection for those who are concerned. On the other hand, through the use of materials and imagery, the artefacts comment on the oppressive and submissive effects of said guidelines.
