Olfactory Memory Casting

‘Olfactory Memory Casting’ is a collective memory archive made using a smell toolkit by individuals aged between 25-35years in the UK. Anecdotally, many people experience a flood of memories after a certain smell. Additionally, humans associate ceratin smells to certain relationships based on their collective past experiences. Inspired by the phenomena of Odour Evoked Autobiographical Memories (OEAMs) and George Herbert Mead's theory of the social self , this project explores the association of smell with social identity and memory; and seeks to use smell as a design medium for expression and creation of collective memory archives.
