Encounters
“Encounters” is a collaborative workshop, aimed at fostering an inter-ethnic sense of belonging for South Asian people living in the UK. Inspired by the traditional South Asian beds, consisting of a wooden frame bordering a set of knotted ropes and commonly known as “charpai, khatiya or manji”, the workshop focuses on the traditional practice of weaving. This is reframed into the making of tablestops to spark conversation through the act of collaborative building, ultimately aiming to bring people together, despite ethnical, cultural, and religious differences, over a cup of chai. The workshop serves as a gateway into challenging and transforming the South Asian perception of other neighbouring communities, promoting a shared sense of belonging through making.
