Understanding Cultures

Understanding cultures in UX design means being able to recognise how culture shapes perception, and how design responds to cultural diversity. This is most often achieved through a research phase where design researchers will aim to include people from different backgrounds in the inquiry. A sensitivity to cultural difference involves an opening of attitude, an awareness of personal bias and a willingness to explore ideas from multiple perspectives. When designs are tested they need account for cultural difference in how people may understand or perceive a design and its functions. Understanding cultures means taking care to expand outwards from the personal cultures of the design team at every stage of the design process.
