Synthesis

Organising complexity requires a way of bringing different aspects of a situation into coherent form. Designers often do this when approaching a particular context, investigating phenomena, making sense of data, and generally finding clarity in the mess of life. Synthesis is the process by which a scattered dispositif comes into focus, it implies filtering multiple viewpoints, often by imposing constraints. Synthesis involves reduction, designers must make careful choices about what to reduce and how to do so without losing richness or nuance. Synthesis means listening to many voices and structuring the resulting confused field of information in a way that is conducive to creative exploration. Synthesis involves abductive reasoning, a way of finding the most likely inference to draw from a design territory.
