Reflection

Reflection in design means being able to study and interpret your own actions and ideas. Reflection is associated with continuous learning as cycles of deliberation and reasoning contribute to development over time. As a design competency reflection implies the ability to recognise and communicate errors and to articulate responses to them that reveal ways of improvement. Reflective designs will allow other people to think about situations in a new way and will open up a space for response and debate. Reflection in design requires the ability to step back from the immediate needs of a design process or outcome to examine the structural details of how it comes into the world and how it may be changed. Reflective ability allows designers to get beneath the surface of their own practice and to grow in different ways.
