Designing for Immersion

Designing for immersion implies a consideration of how people experience the world around them. When we are immersed in a task, an experience, a space, or a moment we tend to be temporarily separate from the rest of the context that surrounds us. This can of course be a negative experience such as a poorly realised VR work or when we are so absorbed by our cell phones to the exclusion of what is happening around us. Designing effective immersive experiences thus involves thinking about where and how we place our attention, what and who is excluded by the design and what is the intended outcome. Immersive design means integrating emotional, technical and physical aspects of the environment to positive psychological effect so that a design can be rewarding on multiple levels of experience. Often this means designing for visual, sonic and tactile effects brought together in a compelling gestalt.
